We Made a Copycat Recipe of Buddy the Elf’s Christmas Spaghetti

Pass the syrup, please!

If you’ve seen the movie Elf, you’re likely familiar with the famous scene where Buddy makes himself breakfast. Instead of whipping up pancakes or one of our favorite Christmas breakfast ideas, he transforms leftover spaghetti into a sugar-packed meal—complete with toaster pastries, mini marshmallows and chocolate candies.

The dish is fitting for Buddy. After all, an elf’s four main food groups are candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup. But how does the recipe fare with humans? A few brave Taste of Home staffers put it to the test—and now you can too! Follow along as we show you how to make a copycat version of Buddy the Elf’s spaghetti.

What You Need:

  • Spaghetti
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Chocolate-covered candies
  • Maple syrup
  • Chocolate sauce
  • Toaster pastries

Step 1: Make the Spaghetti

Buddy uses pasta leftover from last night’s spaghetti dinner, but if you don’t have any on hand, it’s OK to make it fresh. Start by boiling a few quarts of water in a large pot. Add spaghetti and cook according to package directions. When cooked to desired firmness, drain and set aside. The spaghetti will need to cool completely before moving on to the next step.

Test Kitchen tip: Place the pasta in a colander, then run cold water over the top!

Step 2: Add the Toppings

Place cold spaghetti on a plate. Add marshmallows and chocolate candies. Drizzle mixture with generous amounts of maple syrup and chocolate sauce.

Step 3: Crumble Toaster Pastries

Unwrap a package of toaster pastries. Buddy uses a chocolate one, but any flavor will do. With your hands, crumble the pastries on top of the spaghetti mixture.

Step 4: Mix Well

Use your hands to mix the spaghetti. You’ll want to make sure that the syrup and chocolate sauce have a chance to coat each strand of pasta.

Step 5: Enjoy!

Again, with your hands, shovel an enormous mouthful of spaghetti into your mouth. Don’t worry about getting messy—it’s all part of the experience.

And there you have it! Buddy the Elf’s famous spaghetti. Now the only question that remains is will you be a Cotton-Headed Ninny-Muggins? Or will you be brave enough to try it?
