Before becoming theTipsy Housewife, April worked various roles in the food industry for more than 20 years. She later turned her love of cooking and the occasional cocktail (or two) into a dedicated blog where she showcases her easy, affordable and accessible recipes. When “Tipsy”is not cooking for her friends and family, she is busy being a pet mom to her dog, Bailey, and visiting her mother’s home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
April Wiencek: My grandma got me a subscription to TOH magazine when I got my first apartment in 1996. I immediately fell in love with the easy, accessible recipes. I have been a fan ever since, and literally have hundreds of copies of my favorite issues.
TOH: How did you learn to cook?
AW: My family was in the restaurant business. For us, food is love, and everyone has at least one dish they are famous for. When we get together, we look forward to sharing our favorite foods that others make.
TOH: What are your favorite TOH recipes?
AW: There are too many to mention, but one recipe I love was for a Catalina Chicken—that is absolutely delicious. I love Catalina dressing, so it was definitely a hit for me.
TOH: Who do you love to cook for most?
AW: I am old fashioned in the sense that I like to make sure I have dinner on the table every night for Mr. Tipsy. He works second shift, so he doesn’t often get home from work until 11 p.m. I love knowing that he is looking forward to his dinner when he gets home. The way to a person’s heart is definitely through their stomach.
TOH: What types of recipes are you known for?
AW: Classic comfort food with accessible ingredients for all. Most of my recipes come from inspiration from my collected cookbooks, family recipes and recipes from friends’ dishes that I have had at potlucks.
TOH: What’s the next cooking skill you want to master?
AW: I have had a sous vide in the box for two years. This winter, I am going to learn how to use it.
TOH: What made you want to start blogging?
AW: I have worked in food for my whole life. I got tired of the typical 9-to-5, so I nannied. I cooked all their meals and did their shopping. They called me their “housewife.” I was putting the pictures of the food I cooked on social media, and at the time, I was also helping the mom run her social media for her craft business. I decided to create an account for the fun of it and as a creative outlet, and it blew up!
