Coraline “Welcome Home” Cake: The One Detail You Never Noticed

Coraline's Welcome Home cake has a secret message.

We love a good movie Easter egg! If you’re unfamiliar, an Easter egg is a joke or reference cleverly hidden within a scene. Recently, TikTok user @hiddenmoviedetails revealed a surprising and sneaky detail from the film Coraline.

What’s the Secret Detail?

In the 2009 film, an adventurous 11-year-old girl discovers another world that is eerily similar to her real life—only much better. When her adventure turns dangerous, Coraline must count on her resourcefulness, determination and bravery to get back home and save her family.

In one scene, Coraline is served a cake from the family with the words Welcome home written on top. If you look closely, you can see that there is a double loop in the “o” of the word home. Why does that matter? Well, according to graphology, aka the analysis of patterns that occur in handwriting, a double loop on a lowercase “o” means the person must be lying.

There’s only one double loop in the message on the cake, meaning Coraline is welcome, but she is not really home.

That’s Not the Only Cake Secret, Though

Speaking of cake secrets, did you know that one of the ways you can prevent cakes from drying out is to put a pan of water in the oven while the cake is baking? The heat doesn’t rob the moisture this way.

Does your cake stick to the bottom of your baking dish even after you’ve greased it? Put parchment paper at the bottom of each pan the next time.

And the secret to making perfect chocolate cake? You’re not going to believe it, but it’s actually mayonnaise. Turns out, acids (like vinegar found in mayo) helps to sharpen the flavor of your ingredients, so having vinegar in a chocolate cake will give it an even richer taste.
