Several Ritz Crackers Products Recalled Because of Health Risk

The voluntary recall affects Ritz Crackers products that contain cheese, including Ritz Bits and Ritz Crackers with Cheese.

If you pack Ritz Bits (or other Ritz cracker snacks) in your kids’ lunch boxes, you’ll want to keep an eye on the latest news. Mondelz Global LLC, the manufacturer of Ritz Crackers, has issued a voluntary recall for some products in the United States, because the snacks may be compromised by salmonella. (Yessalmonella can be present in more than meat and eggs.)

What Ritz Products Have Been Recalled?

Sixteen products containing whey powder have been voluntarily recalled, including:

  • Ritz Bits Cheese
  • Ritz Cheese Cracker Sandwiches
  • Ritz Bacon Cracker Sandwiches with Cheese
  • Ritz Whole Wheat Cracker Sandwiches with White Cheddar Cheese
  • Ritz Everything Cracker Sandwiches with Cream Cheese

The recalled products have expiration dates between January and April 2019. For anyone who may have bought affected Ritz products, check the manufacturer’s press release for the full list of specific products, packaging photos and UPC codes. You’ll want to identify (and discard) any recalled products before your family digs in.

How Is a “Voluntary” Recall Different?

Unlike other recalls in the past, for ice cream with broken pieces of metal or ground beef with E. coli, this was a voluntary recall. No one has reported being sick or hurt because of the food, and it was issued by the manufacturer, not by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

For answers to your recall questions, contact Mondelz Global LLC at (844) 366-1171; consumer relations specialists will be available Monday-Friday, 9am to 6pm EST. You can also read more here.

Whats Salmonella?

The bacteria salmonellais one of the most common causes of food poisoning, affecting 1.2 million people each year. Symptoms typically appear 12-72 hours after eating the contaminated food and mimic the stomach flu. These symptoms usually last a few days, but those with weakened immune systems, including young children and the elderly, can experience more serious illnesses. Always contact your health professional if you are concerned about food poisoning.
