Baked Apple Slices

Nothing beats these tender baked apple slices over ice cream for satisfying harvest flavor. This old-fashioned treat gives a new twist to traditional baked apples. They are also excellent served over waffles or with ham. I make sure to save room for dessert! —Linda Gaido, New Brighton, Pennsylvania

Huge hit at Christmas! To cut down on calories - I didn’t use butter and substituted with unsweetened applesauce, used trivia sugar, and used halo top ice cream when using for dessert option. Also can use low calorie apple juice or use unsweetened applesauce.

No extra steps, one pan in the oven, and turns out great. I prefer more seasoning so I increased to 1 teas nutmeg and 1/2 teas ginger. Added cinnamon according to the recipe. I wanted less sugar, so I used 1/3 cup white and 1/3 cup brown sugar. Next time I’d reduce butter to 1/4 cup (4 Tbsp) because a half cup was way too much for only three apples. Next time I’ll stretch it out to 4, using the ratios I posted. This was so good that we couldn’t stop eating it! Try some on top of cheesecake, or as a filling between layers. Raves.

This is good if you want that apple pie taste without the crust. I used 4 med sized apples, and still thought that a stick of butter was way too much. So I only used 2-3 TBLSP, and it came out fine. (All other similar recipes I found did not even call for butter at all.) I also added a little water over the apples and a tsp of vanilla, as well as a few golden raisins and some nuts. Excellent over vanilla ice cream!

I recently prepared this dish and received raves from my family. I fixed it as a side dish instead of a dessert and it was delicious. I liked it because the oven does all the work. We will definitely have these delicious apples again. I highly recommend this recipe as a Volunteer Field Editor for Taste of Home.
