Baking Powder Drop Biscuits

One day I had company coming and realized I had run out of biscuit mix. I'd never made biscuits from scratch before, but I decided to give this recipe a try. Now this is the only way I make them!
  • Total Time
    Prep/Total Time: 20 min.
  • Makes
    1 dozen

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2/3 cup 2% milk
  • 1 large egg

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 450°. In a large bowl, combine the first 5 ingredients. Cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, whisk milk and egg. Stir into crumb mixture just until moistened.
  • Drop by 1/4 cupfuls 2 in. apart onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until golden brown, 10-12 minutes. Serve warm.

A simple but delicious recipe. Easy enough for my 12 year old daughter to make with confidence! I am a volunteer field editor. We make this recipe when we don't have time for cutting out traditional biscuits- and honestly, these are just as good!

Absolutely delicious! I was short of biscuit mix and didn't have canned biscuits so had to find an alternative quickly so I was happy to find this recipe. I added buttermilk powder to the mixture and used butter flavored shortening. Will definitely be making these again.
