Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups yellow cornmeal
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 3 cups 2% milk
  • 4 eggs, room temperature, beaten
  • 1/2 cup finely shredded cheddar cheese

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the first 5 ingredients; cut in shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a small bowl, combine milk and eggs; stir into dry ingredients just until blended. Pour into a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Sprinkle with cheese. Bake at 400° for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Cut into squares.
