Cherry Chocolate Cake

I've had the recipe for this chocolate cherry cake for years—it's a chocolate lover's delight! It's so easy to make, and is perfect for cupcakes and bake sale treats, too. I get many requests for the recipe. —Ann Purchase, Panama City, Florida

Was so excited to try this because a friend used to make cherry chocolate cake that I loved. Very disappointed. Extremely dry and heavy. I guess I’ll have to keep looking. :(

HEY EVERYONE! Don't NOT not this recipe a 5 star! I see some of you give it the highest of praise, which it certainly deserves,as it IS a first place winner! I made this for a wedding cake-She wanted black forest and EVERYONE thought it was home made! Anyone that has eaten this cake tracks me down for the recipe! LOL! I haven't tried other combos, but I am sure they would be delicious!

I've been making his recipe for YEARS and everyone loves it, but recently, I wanted apple pie cupcakes. I thought of this recipe, so I used a spice cake mix, added apple pie spice mix (about 2 tablespoons) along with the other cake mix ingredients and took a 15-oz. can of apple pie filling, put it in my food processor and pulsed a few times, so the apple slices were smaller. I stirred it into the cake, filled my cupcake papers 3/4 full and baked. When cooled, I frosted with apple pie spice mix buttercream. I was taking them to the local HS's football coaches (I have been taking them treats every week of football season, since 1995), along with my spicy pretzels. I can tell you they were a HUGE hit, but so easy to make!!! Thanks to Ann Purchase for the original recipe, which inspired me to try this version!!!!!

I forgot about this cake, then made it this week, and remembered why I liked it so much. Love the combination of cherries and chocolate anyway, so this was great. Family loved when I made it before, and tried it again, and they still love it.

Try microwaving a container of chocolate ready-to-spread frosting for 30 seconds on high, then stir and pour over the cake. To die for! Omit the second pie filling. Never have any leftovers.

This cake was moist and yummy. It was quick and easy to make. The cake is good both with and without the cherries on the top. Will definitely make this again.

I have made this cake many, many times and always have requests for the recipe so I print them up ahead of time. One substitute that makes it even better is to add 8 ounces of Cola, Dr. Pepper, or Root Beer instead of water.
