Easy Homemade Chocolate Pudding

MY MOTHER used to make this dessert whenever she could. During the Depression it was hard to find chocolate, but when she found some, she saved enough to make this pudding. I make it now and think of her every time I prepare it.

  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract


  • In a small saucepan, combine sugar and cornstarch. Add milk; stir until smooth. Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture comes to a boil. Cook and stir until thickened, 1-2 minutes longer.
  • Stir in chocolate chips; cook and stir until melted. Remove from the heat. Stir in vanilla. Spoon into dessert dishes. Serve warm or chilled.

1/2 cup: 275 calories, 12g fat (8g saturated fat), 17mg cholesterol, 63mg sodium, 40g carbohydrate (34g sugars, 2g fiber), 5g protein.

    Tripled recipe for Christmas Chocolate Cream Pie - perfect! Added pinch of salt also. Yum! Big hit -

    I made this during my lunch break and it was spectacular! Super easy and quick. I added just a pinch of salt. Enough for four small servings topped with whipped cream.

    I love that this is just 2 servings. 1tbs of cornstarch produced almost chewy pudding which I didn't like. Made it using only 1tsp the second time turned out much better. I'd also recommended whisking the mixture thoroughly to prevent clumps of cornstarch or straining the mixture before chilling.

    This was so easy to prepare. I doubled the recipe for my family and served it warm. Delicious, creamy and not too sweet. Next time I will add a dollop of whip cream and crushed almonds on top. I will make this again!
