Grandma’s Cranberry Stuff
Total TimeStart to Finish: 10 min.
I grew up eating the same dish my grandmother made. My mother changed the recipe and added 1 large box of strawberry jello (according to directions on the box of jello) so it wasn't as tart. I've changed that recipe by adding black cherries and black cherry jello (in place of the strawberry jello) Use the juice from the cherries and some water to make the cold water the directions call for. My kids still didn't like the tart taste of the cranberries so much. Now they love it. I sometimes add chopped walnuts or pecans to it. If you try either recipe I hope you enjoy it!! Personally I still like the original the best, because I like the tart flavor of the cranberries!! ??????????
This is the exact recipe I have used all my life, that I got from MY grandmother, & I have passed it on to my sons & MY grandkids! Occasionally we leave out the nuts, otherwise it’s the same recipe that Ocean Spray published in its early years as the cranberry gurus!
Prepared this minus the nuts and using Splenda (since I'm diabetic). Very good!
Nuts must be hand-chopped not put in food processor or it will ruin the whole thing. Yes an apple is good. And being a lover of spicy food I also add a chili de arbol! Good advice to adjust the sugar as a "pound" has shrunk to 12 ounces for the same price. Grrr...
This is a GREAT recipe, but missing one ingredient an APPLE with skin on. Using the apple you don't need to add all that sugar, maybe a couple of TBSP. Make the day before so the flavors can meld together, if still to tart for you, just and a little more sugar. I make the all year long not just on the holidays. It goes Great with Turkey(of course), Chicken, Ham and other pork cuts or any meat that you'd like a sweet tart relish with, In the summer it's great with anything grilled. I also have the hand crank food grinder and it works great, you get that little bit of crunch and not all mush. The longer is sits the better it gets and will last quite a while in the frig. Sometimes when I'm craving something sweet but don't want chocolate, I'll have a spoonful or two and craving is all gone. Enjoy!!
This is a good old recipe, but wasn't adjusted for time... Years ago the Cranberries were packed in 1 pound bags now they are in 12 ounce bags. As the amount of cranberries has been reduced from 1 pound to 3/4 pound, the sugar should also be reduced from 1 cup to 3/4 cup to keep it tart and not overly sweet. It is always better with Fresh Cranberries. Also use a hand cranked food grinder with coarse cutting plate installed and not a food processor so you do not end up with Cranberry puree. My Grandmother, Mother and Aunts have never used nuts in their recipe nor do I.
My grandmother also added an apple (with skin on) to this, and no walnuts. I have made this for probably 40 years now. Always remember her when I make it. Makes great leftovers, too!
My mom always used a raspberry jello, but I will try plain jelatin bc of the sugar ans food coloring. Thanks
I have made this for years. I have never put walnuts in it. Walnuts is not a nut that I will eat.
I think my family would have liked this better without the walnuts.
