Hawaiian Cheese Bread

This bread is absolutely delicious. My mother’s friend brought it to a party at work, and after one bite, Mom knew she had to have the recipe. With constant nagging, she eventually got it! Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (1 pound) Hawaiian sweet bread
  • 1 block (8 ounces) Swiss cheese
  • 3 slices red onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Directions

  • Cut bread diagonally into 1-in. slices to within 1 in. of bottom. Repeat cuts in opposite direction. Cut Swiss cheese into 1/4-in. slices; cut slices into small pieces. Insert into bread. Combine the onion, butter, garlic and salt; spoon over bread.
  • Wrap loaf in foil. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve warm.

    How do you serve this if it’s still attached at the bottom seems like it would be a mess getting it apart? Tongs? Knife?

    I made this for a work potluck, and it was a huge hit! Because I needed it at noon, and I leave for work at 7am, I assembled it the night before and put it in a crock pot. I turned it on about an hour beforehand - I'd recommend turning it on earlier than I did, as the cheese wasn't as melty as I'd have liked. I also used garlic salt

    Created an account just to review this recipe. Delicious! Easy, quick, and customizable. We added diced bell peppers, black ground pepper and red pepper flakes. I imagine it would be good with bacon (though I'm a vegetarian so i won't try that one), hot peppers/jalapenos, spinach or kale.. endless possibilities!

    There's not a crumb left when I serve this bread. It's a great party food or accompaniment to soups and salads.

    This was great, but I used green onions in place of red, & a dash of garlic salt in place of the minced garlic & salt.

    Made this last night for the Super Bowl. It was pretty good. If I made it again, I would puree the onions, or mince them. I didn't care for the diced pieces of onion on it.
