Jamaican Ham and Bean Soup

"Island vacation in a bowl” might be the best way to describe this hearty soup. A splash of lime juice and a hint of jerk seasoning add tropical taste. —Mary Lou Timpson, Colorado City, Arizona

  • Makes
    7 servings (2-3/4 quarts)

This was an okay soup. Not my jam, but I can see how some people might like it. It doesn't make much prep work, which I appreciate. By the way, the title is very misleading. There actually IS a Jamaican ham soup, and this is not it, and when you search for that soup this is first result on Google. This is not something Jamaicans make. There's nothing remotely Jamaican about this. The word "Jamaican" reflects a particular country and its culture. It's not just a synonym for "has some jerk sprinkled in it." I do thank you for the amazing inside joke, though. This recipe is getting passed around my Jamaican family and it's eliciting some really humorous responses. Be well!

Really different from the plain ham and corn soups.

Surprisingly good flavor! I didn't have Caribbean jerk seasoning, so I used Weber's N'Orleans Cajun, which I'm sure changed the flavor completely, but I loved it.

The refried beans gave the broth a weird texture.

I used less lime than the recipe called for but it was still tooooo much. I could not even taste the Jerk. The sour cream did cut it but it was still JUST okay.
