Maple French Toast Bake

This yummy French toast casserole is a breeze to whip up the night before a busy morning. My family loves the richness it gets from cream cheese and maple syrup. —Cindy Steffen, Cedarburg, Wisconsin

Ingredients

  • 12 slices bread, cubed
  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 cup 2% milk
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • Additional maple syrup

Directions

  • Arrange half of the bread cubes in a greased shallow 2-qt. baking dish. Top with cream cheese and remaining bread. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, milk and syrup; pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.
  • Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes. Uncover; bake 20-25 minutes longer or until golden brown. Serve with additional syrup.

    I end up spreading the cream cheese on the bread (cinnamon raisin), then cubing and placing the bread. To ensure all the bread pieces “soak”, I smash the contents down with a flat spatula. Family favorite!

    I cut the recipe in half for just my husband and I. I did mix a little sugar to the cream cheese and dolloped it on and added a little cinnamon to the egg mixture. Turned out good and will most likely make again.

    This was very good. I used gluten free bread for our family. The only thing I would do differently next time is mix all the bread with the wet ingredients and then put half in then the cream cheese then the other half. I ended up with some burnt pieces on the top that did not get completely covered by the wet mixture. I will make again though. The flavor was good and was very easy.

    My family loves this and whenever I have overnight guests I make it and they love it too! I always use cinnamon bread.

    I use cinnamon swirl bread and my family loves it. Whenever I serve it, people ask for the recipe. Definitely a hit with us!

    This recipe was ok when I made it according to the directions, but excellent when I beat the cream cheese and added sugar to it. I just dropped spoonfulls of the sweetened cream cheese and it made a huge difference. I also added some cinnamon to the egg mixture. The family loves it!
