Peach Cobbler Dump Cake

  • 2 cans (15 ounces each) sliced peaches in extra-light syrup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 package yellow cake mix (regular size)
  • 3/4 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/2 cup cold butter


  • Preheat oven to 350°. Pour 1 can of peaches into a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. Drain remaining can of peaches and add to baking dish; sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle with cake mix and almonds.
  • Cut butter into very thin slices; arrange over top, spacing evenly. Bake until golden brown and fruit is bubbly, 35-40 minutes. Serve warm.

    I'm not a fan of dump cakes. They're usually too sweet and goopy for me, but this one sounds pretty good. Instead of cutting the butter into thin slices, you can shave it along the top with a potato peeler. You can also grate it on the large holes of a box grater and just sprinkle it over the rest of the ingredients. The butter should be frozen for this to work. Don't worry; it thaws quickly.

    I like the fat-to-calorie ratio. I calculate that this recipe has something like 42% of calories from fat. I'm not sure about slicing really cold butter super thinly. I fear I would screw that up royally. I would be more inclined to put the cake mix in my food processor, cut up super cold butter into the mix and process it really quickly, then sprinkle the whole thing over the top. I would also think about adding a wee bit of flour to the peach syrup to make it thicken properly. I like the idea of using butter pecan cake mix in place of yellow cake mix. I'll bet you anything this is a really good basic recipe that can be tweaked without too much trouble. In the summer, I would probably toss some fresh raspberries in with the peaches. I haven't tried this yet, but I am certainly going to give it a shot.

    My mom has been making these for 50 years!! but you guys, we have a twist that we like so much! you know those nature valley crunchy granola bars in the green box... Yeah, so smash that up in the pouch, super easy and pour over the butter pats then the cinnamon and a small handfull of oats. Super yummy

    It tasted pretty good, but a little too sweet for me. The cake mix did not have enough moisture to cook properly with the butter, it was kind of powdery in spots. I probably would make some changes if I were to make it again.

    I made seven of these in place of my usual cobbler recipe for a lunch that our church provides for homeless people. I’m sorry to say that they were not at all satisfactory. I unfortunately did not taste them before I took the to the lunch site. Fortunately, we had enough donations along with the other cakes that I brought so we did not have to inflict them on anyone. I had the dessert chairperson throw them away. No more short cuts for me.

    I followed recipe exactly EXCEPT I used 3 Tbs dark brown sugar and 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon. I used chopped walnuts. It was fantastic! Warmed with ice cream?! YUMMMM

    I have made this before, and it's a quick, great, go to recipe. I made some to take to a shut-in neighbor who loves desserts! I didn't have two cans of peaches, so I subbed 1 can with fresh peaches. I always melt the butter and pour it in a thin stream all over the cake...I kind of go in rows up and down. Also, I used crushed walnuts instead of almonds because that's what I had on hand. My daughter had brought me a huge bag of shelled walnuts as a bribe to make her a loaf of my banana nut bread. Haha. It worked! I wish I could save the smells that emanated from my kitchen and market it as a room deodorizer... ??

    It was good but I might use it with less syrup then it tells you to use in the recipe.

    Great recipe and very simple to put together. Will try it with pecans next time. Make sure your butter is cold and it will slice up very thin . The top browned up nicely and it was good with that extra crunch with the almonds.

    Question for you: Can you MELT the butter and pour it over? I'll never get those little pieces of butter scattered evenly so that every piece of cake is covered?
