I have to be honest here. I have yet to make this recipe. I have, however, made similar candies. Some suggestions for those trying this recipe. Forget the cook time and use a thermometer. You need to hit a temperature of at least 234°F. but no more than 238°F. Also, use the strongest root beer flavoring you can get.
This recipe is essentially the fantasy fudge recipe on marshmallow fluff jars. I love root beer flavoring, and upped the concentrate to a tbsp. The color was pretty, but it did not taste like root beer at all. This was using root beer concentrate. I don't know if root beer extract would work better. I'm using the left over concentrate to make root beer in my fourth grade class room.
Followed recipe to a T. Did not set well. Had to scoop out, reboil, add more chips and reset. Came out extremely sweet, still too smooshy and not at all root beer flavored. Not worth the effort to make
This recipe did not work for me at all, I tried it twice and it came out like mush, tried to freeze it but it was still mushy, my kids were very disappointed
Who doesn't love rootbeer - it was the perfect color and taste was perfect too
I used the McCormick root beer concentrate (3 teaspoons) and it was plenty brown. I used 1 teaspoon of vanilla for the white layer.
five stars. I made this as directed and my only change was to add 3 tbs of root beer concentrate and I added food coloring to get the brown color. Everyone wanted the recipe
I made this following these directions to a "T" and it has some issues...1. No Brown/White layers...both are white...where's you get the color from? 2. The fudge doesn't set up well...needs more chips and half as much of the Sugar/butter/evap milk mixture to solidify! It is REALLY sweet, not being a smart aleck....and I added a 3rd tsp of Root Beer flavoring. Anyone have any other suggestions to make this turn out well?? Not sure what to do with my pan of not-so-solid root beer fudge!!
Very good, but looks nothing like the picture. My adjustments: 3 tsps of root beer extract, 1 tsps of vanilla, 10 oz of vanilla chips, 2.5 c of sugar. Gives you more of that root beer pop!
My family loves this recipe. The key is to use rootbeer candy concentrate NOT rootbeer flavoring. The candy concentrate I find at my favorite candy supply store fives this fudge a dark brown color and super rootbeer flavor.
