Rum Balls

Rum flavor comes through nicely in these traditional, no-bake rum balls. I like to make a few dozen at a time and give them to my neighbors for Christmas—Audrey Larson, Bloomington, Minnesota
  • Total Time
    Prep/Total Time: 40 min.
  • Makes
    3-1/2 dozen

Ingredients

  • 2-1/2 cups crushed vanilla wafers (about 75 wafers)
  • 1 cup ground pecans
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons baking cocoa
  • 1/4 cup rum
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Additional confectioners' sugar or crushed vanilla wafers

Directions

  • Mix together wafer crumbs, pecans, confectioners' sugar and cocoa. Combine rum, honey and water; stir into crumb mixture. Shape into 1-in. balls. Roll in additional confectioners' sugar or wafer crumbs. Store in an airtight container.

Test Kitchen Tips
  • Make these ahead to allow the flavors to meld together. Substitute flavored vodka in place of rum.
  • Roll half of the rum balls in powdered sugar and the other half in crushed vanilla wafers for texture and visual appeal.

My mom has been making rum balls for as long as I can remember. Probably at least 50 years. She makes them every year. We never freeze or refrigerate and they last a very long time in an air tight container. She uses corn syrup instead of honey and has never used water. I have also rolled them in cocoa powder instead of powdered sugar. You can experiment with different cookies, nuts

"SHARLENE, YOU NEED TO USE ALL 2.5 CUPS OF WAFFERS. THE VODKA IS OK TO SUBSTITUTE FOR WATER. I MADE THESE A FEW YEARS AGO IN SEPTEMBER. PUT THEM IN FRIDGE FOR 2 WEEKS. THEN FROZE THEM UNTIL THANKSGIVING. LET THEM SIT OUT UNTIL UNTHAWED THEN PUT IN FRIDGE UNTIL XMAS. THEY GET STRONGER THE LONGER THEY SIT. ALWAYS USE DARK RUM. CRENZEL (Cruzan?) HAS 151 SINCE BACARDI QUIT MAKING IT. KRAKEN ALSO VERY GOOD WITH THIS RECIPE. NEVER USE WATER. YOU CAN VARY WITH CONDIMENTS 2 TASTE OR MAKE A FEW BATCHES TO VARY WTH COATING. I DID ALL THE CRUSHING OLD SCHOOL WITH HELP FROM MY TEENAGE SONS." Linda, don't be a dick. I'll translate your comment, too. "Could someone please explain Carl's review to me? I'm having trouble understanding it, and instead of using my brain, to figure it out, or ask for help, like a grown up, I'd rather make a snarky comment for attention."

k so I made this, very sticky why ? is it maybe because I only put 1-1/2 cups of crumbs when it's suppose to be 2-1/2 cups, but anyways I had to put lots of icing sugar and when I rolled them they started to go flat like a pancake I am for sure making them again just need some tips from other people, I also did a little change, I put rum and a a little bit of vodka,,, no harm hehehe

Let me first and foremost say I did not follow this recipe precisely in that I did not use water (never have never will, why waste room for rum??) and I used dark rum rather than light rum (again, always have, never will use light rum...Kraken all the way!). That being said, the recipe is easy with minimal cleanup! I used my Ninja to grind up the wafers and the pecans. It all mixed nice and easy. Now to wait a week and a half before eating them!

I love the simplicity of this recipe and using honey rather than corn syrup. Great recipe to master and then add your own variations.
