Seasoned Taco Meat

I got this recipe from the restaurant where I work. It's famous in our town for the blend of seasonings, and now the secret is out! —Denise Mumm, Dixon, Iowa
  • Total Time
Prep: 10 min. Cook: 35 min.
  • Makes
    6-1/2 cups

  • 3 pounds ground beef
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 2 cups water
  • 5 tablespoons chili powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 3/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

  • In a large cast-iron skillet or Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add water and seasonings. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, until the water is evaporated, about 15 minutes.
You can serve Seasoned Taco Meat in a variety of ways. Use it as a filling for tacos or enchiladas, or as a topping for pizza or baked potatoes.

Great recipe! This makes a lot, so I make it and freeze it for future meals. Good flavor! Joyce Moynihan, Volunteer Field Editor.

This is the recipe I use every time we have tacos now. Sometimes I add Trader Joe’s Chile Lime seasoning and that adds a little oomph. So good as is though. Thanks!

I made it exactly as written - and it was a success! My husband said, "No more mixes!" I love the fact that you make a big batch and freeze it. It is so convenient on a busy day to have this much of dinner already made.

Great recipe to keep on hand in the freezer. Easy and uses staple pantry items, but you can to it to make it perfect for your family! It's a keeper.

This is a great starting-point taco or nacho meat recipe. From here, I might go in a million directions. Some I've tried are: Add finely chopped vegetables like chiles, carrots, tomatoes or garlic. Replace some or all of the meat with chopped eggplant, cooked black beans, or a meat substitute. Add a handful of chopped fresh green onions and cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice, just before serving.

Easy to make. This time when I made this I subsisted Bob's Red Mil TVP for ground beef. Works with ground turkey too.
