Soda Cracker Chocolate Candy

"My husband and I make several batches of this easy, chocolaty nut squares for holiday gifts," notes Margery Bryan of Royal City, Washington. "Most people are surprised to learn the recipe includes soda crackers." Married for 22 years, the couple recently retired and sold their ranch. Both love to cook.

  • 35 to 40 soda crackers
  • 1 cup butter, cubed
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1-1/2 cups coarsely chopped walnuts


  • Line a 15x10x1-in. baking pan with foil and coat with cooking spray. Place crackers in rows on foil. In a saucepan, melt butter; add the brown sugar and bring to a boil. Boil for 3 minutes. Pour over crackers and spread until completely covered. Bake at 350° for 5 minutes (crackers will float). Remove from the oven. Turn oven off. Sprinkle chocolate chips and walnuts over crackers. Return to the oven until chocolate is melted, about 3-5 minutes. Remove from the oven; using a greased spatula, press walnuts into chocolate. Cut into 1 in. squares while warm. Cool completely; remove candy from foil.

    I was sent this recipe, so I thought I would try it last night. I was happy with it, until I took the brown sugar/butter mixture to spread over the crackers, and it didn't seem to "cover" all of them, why, I don't know? I then put this into the oven for 5 minutes, took out, and then put the chips on to melt, covering with foil for a few minutes. It turned out pretty good, but I don't know if anyone can tell me why I could not get the brown sugar/butter mixture to cover all the pan of crackers? I cooked/boiled/mixed it for 3 minutes as it said.

    I make this all the time, my family loves it. Everytime I make it , it cooks a bit different. I melt the butter first then add the brown sugar. I use #6 on my cooktop and keep it at a light boil for 6-8 min. The mixture changes to a warm creamy medium brown. I pour this over the crackers and bake for 4-5 min. When I take them out of the oven, I have put the chips on and let them sit for a few minutes on the counter. They will melt, just spread them with a spoon, then top with nuts.

    If you boil the sugar and butter over medium heat and stir, they will not burn. I made this last night. It was fine. In fact, I think I could have boiled it for 4 minutes because the caramel was too soft. I made this for Thanksgiving. It was big hit. I took some to work. It was a big hit. The batch I made last night is for today's knitting club meeting. I'm sure it will be a big hit there too.For those who say the chocolate doesn't melt, you have to spread/smooth out the chocolate with a spatula or spoon before adding the nuts. Chocolate chips tend to hold their shape so this part is necessary even though it isn't specified in the recipe.Someone recently used the same ingredients but used less chocolate, no nuts and it was more like caramel coated crackers with chocolate chips on top. It was very delicious. The crackers were very sturdy and broken up into big pieces.

    This recipe is flawed. If you boil butter and sugar for 3 minutes it will burn. Simmer it for two minutes. Also there is no way chocolate chips will melt in an oven turned in 5 minutes. Leave the oven on and use chocolate bars likes Hershey's which melts easier.

    I made this recipe today and added popped popcorn on top of the caramel, then followed directions. The popcorn was delicious in this recipe.

    I just attempted this recipe, the chocolate chips wouldn't melt. So, I was left w/ gritty chocolate that I couldn't smooth. Any ideas where I might've went wrong? I remember making this all the time when I was in highschool. I used milk chocolate instead of semi-sweet. Help!

    Way too sweet. No taste but sugar
