Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

The recipe for these four-ingredient biscuits has been handed down for many generations. —Fran Thompson, Tarboro, North Carolina
  • Total Time
    Prep/Total Time: 30 min.
  • Makes
    8 biscuits

  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 2 cups self-rising flour
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • Melted butter

  • In a large bowl, cut butter into flour until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in buttermilk just until moistened. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; knead 3-4 times. Pat or lightly roll to 3/4-in. thickness. Cut with a floured 2-1/2-in. biscuit cutter.
  • Place on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 425° until golden brown, 11-13 minutes. Brush tops with butter. Serve warm.
Editor's Note
As a substitute for each cup of self-rising flour, place 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a measuring cup. Add all-purpose flour to measure 1 cup.

I have never been able to make biscuits. These were light and fluffy. Everyone liked them. I made mine in the food processor. I pulsed the dough just until it came together. So easy to make. Excellent recipe!!

This is my go-to biscuit recipe for biscuits and gravy! It can be easily made by pulsing the cubed butter into the flour using a food processor, then adding just enough buttermilk for a nice moist dough (also pulsed in using the food processor). Be sure to use parchment paper when baking.
